Train in Mountaineering

Mountaineering is a sport that requires consistent training. You can’t show up in the mountains
one day and expect to climb 7000mts peaks!

Unfortunately, owing to the fast-paced city lives these days, people are unable to give enough time before and after an expedition to train and get better at the sport.

We, at Wandering Boots Adventures have just the solution for you! This program led by Ankit Naithani, Prani Manchaiah (NOLS Mountaineering Instructor) and Srivats Swamy (NOLS Backpacking and Rock Instructor) is focussed towards building your mountaineering skills; so the next time you show up in the mountains, you are well-equipped & better prepared!

More About the program

The aim of this workshop is to introduce/train participants to/in real-life mountaineering scenarios. The workshop will be held on the outskirts of Manali which offers one of the most functional and spectacular
mountain infrastructure for training. The group will be guided by experienced guides and instructors who have years of experience of both climbing and more importantly guiding/instructing. After this workshop, the participants will have a strong theoretical and practical know-how of all techniques required to climb
technical peaks safely. These techniques require consistent practice and training before applying the same on a summit attempt.

Skillsets

Trail picking in Soft Snow: One of the biggest nemeses of a mountaineer on a summit day climb is tackling soft snow. The technique if not mastered correctly, exhausts a climber. Participants will be shown demos and will be made to practice trail picking in soft snow, both, while roped up, and while on a fixed line.
Rock Climbing: The basics of any type of climbing is always Rock climbing. The rope skills,
belaying and anchoring techniques are always easily learnt on rock and then can be
reciprocated on ice or alpine slopes. The rock craft training will include Rope fixing demos, Top
rope climbing, Jumar climbing, Belaying, Descending, Rappelling and Rope coiling.
Expedition Layering : Most expeditions fail even before reaching the base camp owing to
inadequate or substandard layering. Mountaineering gear procurement can be very confusing.
Participants will be given extensive information (with examples) on good gear and guided on gear
procurement.

Ice Climbing: Nothing prepares a climber for mountain climbing like Ice climbing. The
participants will be made to top-rope climb frozen waterfalls (beginner level) in Lahaul.
Participants will get an exposure to usage of ice axe and crampons on ice. Safety will be of utmost
priority while ice climbing.
Technical skills: Participants will have exposure of and will be able to practice the following
technical skills:
1.Jumaring – Using a Jumar on a fixed rope line and ascending on a snow patch
2.Ice Axe usage – Using an ice axe while walking on a glacier & also arresting a fall using an ice axe.
3.Crampon usage – Learning different kinds of walking techniques with crampons on ice. After the
workshop the participants would know how to wear crampons by themselves.
Bad weather day training: Training for hiking in soft snow on a bad weather day so that
participants are prepared for all eventualities.
